Why do electronic equipment, electrical equipment, fluorescent and energy-saving light bulbs need to be recycled?
IT equipment is considered hazardous waste because of the lead, copper and other heavy metals that IT components contain. Energy-saving light bulbs use up to 70% less electricity than regular light bulbs and their life span is much longer. However, energy-saving light bulbs contain vapourized mercury that evaporate as soon as the bulb is damaged. If an energy-saving light bulb is broken by accident, immediately open a window or door and leave the room until dangerous vapours are aired out. Most heavy metals tend to bioaccumulate, which means they accumulate in fats and are not expelled by the body like other substances. Excessive doses can damage internal organs and can even cause death.
We are all aware of how rapidly the IT industry is growing and how computers are becoming "outdated" every six months. That of course means that the amount of IT waste is growing dramatically and according to some studies, 4000 tons of IT waste is becoming outdated and discarded every hour!
Protect the natural environment you live in, dispose of IT equipment legally
What should we do with IT waste and fluorescent light bulbs?
The BIS recycling center recycles this hazardous waste, separating the components that can be recycled in Serbia and exporting the rest as auxiliary goods. Unfortunately, Serbia still does not have a good waste collection infrastructure, but the BIS recycling center has two sites where you are able to bring all your battery or electricity-run electronic and electrical appliances, as well as fluorescent tubes and light bulbs:
